India Mars mission

May 5, 2013 -- Mangalyaan, also known as Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM), is India’s first interplanetary expedition, designed to study the red planet and serve as a technology demonstrator for future missions.
The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) orbiter will study the Martian atmosphere to determine what led to the planet's loss of surface water and to pinpoint locations where there are indications, such as methane, of subsurface life. After its launch from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Andhra Pradesh, the satellite will orbit Earth several times to escape the planet's gravitational pull and reach the right velocity, then head off on the 500-day journey to the Red Planet.
